Ghosts in the machine (well, it is an iPod)
Did you ever scan through your digital photo library and stop on an image to wonder “How the hell did that get in there?”
And I’m not talking about naked selfies.
I’m referring to “ghosts.” Images that bear no relationship to the ones before, nor the ones that follow.
For example, suppose you just took 12 photos of a snowy egret in a lovely, colorful, natural setting. And there — right there! — in Frame #7 is a strange . . . well . . . what the heck is that anyway? You don’t know, so you hit delete. End of story.
I’m speaking hypothetically, of course.
With me, it is never the end of the story, but the beginning.
Last week on Halloween night I took dozens of mostly terrible photos. I blame it on bad lighting and rum. But even among the less than sterling images there were four that made me sit up and say, “WTF? How did these get here?”
They were, clearly, images from another dimension. Drained of all color and composition. Clearly, not from Halloween. Perhaps of Halloween. Clearly, ghosts in my iPod.
Clearly.
They are, however . . . and dare I say it?
Artsy.
Yes, artsy.
I might even get some of these blown up to hang on a wall. I, mean, isn’t there such a thing as accidental art? Does it all have to be deliberate? Willed into existence by the fertile palpitations of the driven creative mind? Maybe the subconscious has something to say about all this, buddy.
The exhibition
There is something sensuous about the lines in this one, suggesting the title “Tank top in recline” . . . am I right?
This one I call “An appeal from beyond #1.”
And this is “An appeal from beyond #2.”
And finally, “Mergers and acquisitions, the dark arts.”
But wait, there’s more. Just two, I promise. This one was ensconced in a series of images from a day at sea in a boat with friends. A bright sunny day, with blue water and green trees and colorful people. And then this:
. . . I’m pretty sure it is not what you think it is. Nor do I have any idea what I might think it is, but isn’t it a little sexy?
And finally, this is a deliberate abstract, taken while I was lying on my back in a savasanna pose. Can you guess where?

Maybe a sticking button, or maybe a ghost bits/bytes, if you reuse SD cards
