Editor’s note: Updates on June 17 include new information on our electricity situation, the removal of some huge crocodiles and the launch of a new internet radio station in San Pedro, called “The Breeze.” How is that for newsy?

Day three with no electricity.

I grow disoriented. Energy levels have dipped dangerously low. Isolation drops like a black curtain around me. There is no communication with the outside world. No stove, no microwave, no air conditioners, no WiFi, no TV — and as of today, no hot water.

I don’t know how much longer we can last. This may be the final message you receive from me, as it feels as if our oxygen supply has been cut off. Certainly the Internet has been cut off.

Making art on a Thursday afternoon in a Belize beach bar

Great leaping tree frogs! About 20 people got together in Feliz, a San Pedro beachside sports bar for an afternoon of socializing and making art. Does it look like they had a good time? I think so!
Great leaping tree frogs! About 20 people got together in Feliz, a San Pedro beachside sports bar for an afternoon of socializing and making art. Does it look like they had a good time? I think so!

There were 19 budding artists packed into the northside sports bar Feliz on Thursday afternoon, bent over the L-shaped bar and nearby tables, all trying to capture the essence of the beguiling little Belize tree frog on canvas. Rose was among them.

A local artist-gallery owner, Melody Sanchez-Wolfe, organizes these periodic art gatherings at a few bars and restaurants around San Pedro. Read the rest of this entry »
