This is Belize: Seriously, Earl was barely a Class 1 hurricane?
This morning, first light, at The Cloisters, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
There is debris everywhere from docks that were wiped out, up the coast. Ours is gone too.
Looking south, The Palapa Bar is gone too.
Hardly any docks are standing, including the brand new one built just north of us at The Dive Bar. Some of the debris shattered doors on first floor units sending sand and water inside and driving the occupants to the second floor.
I can’t imagine what the toll must be in downtown San Pedro or in the low-lying wooden-structure villages like San Mateo.
I hear Ramon’s and Ecologic lost their docks as well. Someone said there is hardly a dive shop left.
Some photos on Facebook for you from around town:
Pictures from Corrie Sternberg, on Boca del Rio and near the Palapa Bar’s wreckage.
Pictures from Jorge Aldana, farther down the beach, near Wahoo’s
Karen Brodie’s photo of Jodie and Scott Harnish picking through the wreckage of their Palapa Bar.
And this was barely a Category 1 Hurricane.
Thanks a lot, Earl.

Oh Bob, I’m so sorry. Poor, beautiful, Ambergris. Of course everyone will surely come together to get it back to its former beauty soon. 😥

Sad, but docks and buildings can be rebuilt. I just hope everyone is safe and sound.

Amazingly no reports of fatalities on Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker.

I can’t believe how much damage this hurricane caused. Thankful for no loss of lives, but many have lost a lot, and this will take awhile to recover from. So sad for the island and her people, as well as the rest of the country.

We were at Ramon’s this week. Just got back yesterday. We had a beachfront room very close to the dive shop and it was indeed demolished.
Guests and staff alike worked Thursday to start cleanup. The saddest thing to me was local parents walking their children through the debris fishing for dive equipment to take.
