Time to put the ‘fest’ in LobsterFest!

As you can see, everyone is scrambling to set up their booths for tonight’s festival. Starting around 5 p.m. , the smell of lobster prepared in countless savory ways will be overwhelming.

Virtually every experienced LobsterFester has told us to show up early because the lines will quickly grow to crazy lengths.

So, now I wonder, if EVERYONE shows up early, to beat the lines ….

Restaurants from all over San Pedro will have booths in which they will bring on their best lobster dish. The competition is fierce and the glory lasts all year long. Last year's Casa Picasso lobster cannoli is still the talk of the town.

Ah, no worries.

You know it is a Belize festival because the Belikin name is everywhere.

One more, for the record. Very soon, the park will be filled with people grazing on barbecue, fried, dipped, boiled and oiled lobster.

Grand day in Boca del Rio

Food was served beneath the palapa just across the road from Wayo's Beach Beernet on Thursday afternoon. We filled the tables there with friends and neighbors from the Tres Cocos neighborhood.

On Thursday the LobsterFest passport called for a stop at Wayo’s Beach Beernet on Boca del Rio.

No problem. The beach bar is on our way home from yoga. Quick stop. Stamp the passport (each stamp translates into a ticket for a raffle tonight — valuable prizes!). Head home.

Then we saw the lobster corn fritters with mango sauce topping. And the cheese-and-lobster-filled peppers — poppers! — and, well, ice cold rum punches were $5 BZD and a bucket of 6 Belikins could be had for $20 BZD.

Seriously good lobster corn fritters ($15 BZD) and lobster-cheese poppers ($3 BZD each).

And then, it seemed s if our entire neighborhood decided to show up.

This is how the clock suddenly indicates that it is after 4 p.m. and a blissful three hours have passed.

I think I’m beginning to understand Belize time.

Ed and Shirley are neighbors, living in the building directly across from us. They arrived in Belize about the same time we did, used the same rental management company, bought the same bikes. Our parallel lives continue -- Shirley lived in San Diego, too, practically next door to where I raised my sons.

This little guy danced in mesmerizing circles while his grandpa played music Thursday at Wayo's beach bar.

What was it that got their attention -- another score in the World Cup game on the big screen? A hot new dog strolling in off the beach? Did someone drop a lobster bit onto the floor? Sorry, I can't help. We'll just have to make something up.

We’ll see you in January, hopefully, but Riki requires us to come back again in June next year for the Lobsterfest. We “blew it” by several weeks this time.

Wayo’s on Boca Del Rio is our favorite hangout! Nice to see some pix of it. We were there on a day trip from Corozal about a month ago…saw Wayo and few more friends we know there…and toured Wayo’s newest addition on the beach — the AquaVista hotel. Trevor, Ruby, and Archie are about the best bartenders on this island!

      Maureen,
It is a straight $2BZD = $1USD. Virtually everybody accepts American currency, too, so you can spend with ease ….
