Street scene: Belizean mom multitasks on the move

Posted on Updated on

She was pedaling south on Nautilus Drive in the Boca del Rio neighborhood of San Pedro, about mid-afternoon on Friday. We were pedaling north.

She was a mom with two little girls.

I know this because the six-month-old was sitting serenely in the basket on the front of her bike, legs crossed yoga-style. The two year-old was perched side-saddle on the crossbar.

Got the picture? We see kids transported like this all the time. Sometimes as many as three kids on a bike with their dad. One in a basket, one on the handlebars and one on the crossbar.

You do what you’ve got to do to get from one place to the next. You know?

This is the first time, however, that I have seen a mom with two toddlers on her bike, texting on her cell-phone while steering through traffic with her left hand on the handlebar.

Try it sometime. Only, use bags of flour or sand — not your kids. It can’t be easy. She made it look effortless.

Crazy, mama.
